Understanding Lookalike Domains

Small changes in a domain can borrow the appearance of a name you recognize.

Almost familiar can still be different

A lookalike domain may use a changed letter, an extra word, or another subtle difference. In our website example, micros0ft-security.example uses a zero in a familiar-looking name. It is a reserved demonstration domain, not an active threat destination.

Read the complete address

Display text, a sender name, or a prominent word may draw attention away from the actual address. Look at the domain that controls the destination rather than relying on the portion that looks familiar.

Treat it as a signal in context

A spelling difference can be important, but domain appearance alone does not settle intent. Compare the request with established communications, and verify sensitive actions independently.
